The Three Types of Insomnia

Insomnia can become a relentless cycle of anxiety as you toss and turn all night, wondering when you'll fall asleep and why you're still wide awake.

There are different types of insomnia, and your most effective treatment may be depend on which type you suffer from.

Sleeplessness falls into three main categories:

  1. Initial insomnia - you have difficulty falling asleep, usually taking 30 minutes or longer to fall into a sleep state.
  2. Middle insomnia - after falling asleep, you have problems maintaining your sleep state, waking up after a short time and often remaining awake until the early morning hours.
  3. Late or Terminal insomnia - you awake early in the morning after less than 6 hours of sleep.
