Insomnia and Television

Insomnia can have many causes, including too much mental stimulation before trying to fall asleep.

Watching television in bed (or just before going to bed) can delay or prevent sleep because it gives your brain too much to think about to feel drowsy.

Among the worst programs to watch before falling asleep are the news, violent movies or shows, and anything negative or upsetting.

TV can have an especially major impact on children's sleep.

Children tend to be more impressionable than adults, and watching television or movies right before bedtime can get them too wound up or disturbed to sleep.

One solution is to turn off the TV at least an hour before bedtime.

Then spend that hour winding down the day, reading, meditating, or having cozy family time.

You'll all feel drowsier and more prepared for a good night's sleep.
